BETWEEN THE LINES: Message From the President – Fall 2005
By Carol Barnhart

Return to Newsletters Table of Contents

To all MHQP members:

NAHQ Conference News
As many of you know, the NAHQ Conference in New Orleans was cancelled this year. Our thoughts and prayers are with our fellow quality organizations in the Gulf states as they re-build their community and their lives.

MHQP Fall Educational Seminar
You are invited to attend our fall educational seminar, "Using Composite Measures to Improve Patient Care" on October 25th. The Minnesota healthcare community has long been a leader in innovation and using composite (bundled) measures is a concept on the cutting edge. Come hear from two leaders, Dr. Gail Amundson and Terry Murray, MEd, discuss the practical, value-added implications of this new way of measuring outcomes.

Annual Business Meeting
Following the seminar, we will have the annual MHQP business meeting at which we will hold elections for President-elect and Education Chair and vote on some changes to our By Laws. We have not received any nominations to date for these positions. It is essential in a volunteer organization such as MHQP that it have new faces on the Board as the terms expire. We will take nominations from the floor at the business meeting on October 25th. Please consider volunteering your time or asking a coworker to become involved in the leadership of our organization.

The Future of MHQP To Be Discussed at the Business Meeting
It is with some reservations that the Board must announce that if no new Board and committee chairs are nominated this year, we must consider dissolving the organization. For the past 10 years, there has been difficulty filling the Board seats and committee chair positions. The previous Board served at least two terms and this Board has served two terms. We must question whether the organization can fulfill its mission and, indeed, should if there is no one willing to lead. MHQP exists primarily to provide education on healthcare quality to its members and to represent Minnesota at the national level. There are other means of obtaining education about quality although some of those organizations are not specific to healthcare. Our members are busy so online education might be the answer. Unfortunately, MHQP does not have the expertise nor the resources to create online education. This is available through other organizations also. We are in current need of a President-elect and Education Committee chair. If the President-elect position is daunting to new volunteers, our current membership chair, Jennie Rodlund, has considered volunteering to serve as President-elect. We would then have two Committee Chair positions open. We will have discussions on this topic as part of our annual business meeting after the elections. We do not wish to dissolve MHQP but see no alternative. According to the By Laws, any funds must be given to a charitable cause. We would consider donating our assets to assist the healthcare quality organizations in Mississippi, Louisiana, and Arkansas. This would be voted on by members attending the business meeting on October 25th.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend on October 25th. The seminar and meeting will be held at UCare, 2000 Summer Street NE, Minneapolis, MN.

It is important that all members of MHQP know you are invited to attend Board Meetings. If you have questions, feel free to contact the Board Members.

Quality Line Quality Line and Between the Lines are designed to provide members information on vital issues in Minnesota healthcare, trends, CQI methodologies, legislation and news about our organization. Published quarterly in Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter.
