BETWEEN THE LINES: Message From the President
By Beth Green

I am relatively new to the organization but I believe that working in quality improvement is the right way to make changes in our health care system. For many years I worked in management in the acute care setting, working diligently to cut costs and improve care. During that time I had the opportunity to attend CQI training courses and began to try and utilize these tools in making changes in the departments that I managed. Of course, if I knew then what I know now I would of done a lot of things differently. One of them would have been to join the MHQP and tap into the experience and skills of other members of this group. Well, hindsight is always better and now I feel that I would like to help other individuals taking on new roles or projects in quality improvement.

This year I have several objectives, which are key to supporting health care quality professionals. First, we are working to provide educational opportunities for our members. The next education meeting will be held on November 14, 2002. A Board meeting will follow this session. We hope to have a winter and a spring meeting. Second, we need to recruit members and particularly individuals willing to serve on the Board. My hope is to develop a group of individuals willing to take a turn providing the leadership for the MHQP. With this group, we would have a pool of individuals with the skills needed to take a turn at one of the Board positions. Second, I would like to coordinate a CPQH study session for individuals interested in taking the CPHQ exam the fall of 2003.

Thus I have two initiatives that I would like to implement this year to support the education and leadership development of MHQP members. First, I would like to develop a mentor list for MHQP members. Second, as mentioned above I would like to coordinate a CPHQ study session for MHQP members.

CPHQ Study Session ! ! !
Are you interested in taking the CPHQ exam but have not had the time to plan or begin to think about studying? Well, the MHQP will be coordinating a CPHQ study session for its members. A planning meeting will be held on Thursday, November21, 2002 at ICSI, 8009 34th Avenue South Bloomington, Minnesota in conference room C.

If you are a member and are interested in preparing for and taking the CPHQ by the fall of 2003. Please contact Beth Green at 952-814-7076 or beth.green@icsi.org.
